REFLECTIONS FROM BEHIND THE LENS

WHAT COLLABORATION REALLY MEANS TO ME AS A FILMMAKER

A short-form podcast reflection by Seattle-based filmmaker & Videographer Nathan Corpus

When people hear the word collaboration, it often sounds like a buzzword. Something that gets thrown around in job descriptions or pitches. But for me, it’s the core of what I do.

Whether I’m working with a nonprofit, a small business, or a growing brand, the best projects aren’t just the ones with the strongest visuals or smoothest edits. They’re the ones where there’s trust on both sides. Where we shape the story together.

One of my most memorable collaborations came from working with a physical therapy office here in Seattle. The client wanted a mini-documentary for his website. Something honest, personal, and informative. From the very beginning, he was deeply involved in the process. He cared not just about the visuals, but about the clarity of the messaging. He wanted to make sure every client being interviewed fully understood the questions and felt comfortable with their answers.

At first, I worried I might not be giving him enough creative space. I’ve had those conversations before, the kind where a client starts to micromanage and the project loses momentum. But this wasn’t that.

What I learned quickly was that his enthusiasm wasn’t about control. It was about care. He just wanted to be present and involved in telling his story. That ended up making the final product even stronger.

He watched everything as it was happening and gave real-time feedback, and because of that, we were able to shape something that truly felt like his. The best part? He saw a noticeable uptick in website clicks after adding the videos we created together.

That kind of result is always a win. But what stayed with me most was what I learned from him: the importance of being open, adaptable, and genuinely collaborative.

Sometimes, being a filmmaker means stepping back and letting someone else lead the emotional tone. My job isn't to own the story. It's to honor it. I'm just the vessel.
